Abstract

520,172. Driving-gear. TRIGGS, W. W. (Argus Motoren Ges.). Oct. 14, 1938, No. 29864. [Class 7 (ii)] In an engine having radial cylinders disposed starwise in each of a number of parallel planes, power is taken from one or more points along the length of the crankshaft or from a divided crankshaft and transmitted to a final driven shaft through one or a pair of intermediate shafts. In its simplest form power is transmitted to the intermediate shaft by gearing located midway along the length of a single crankshaft. As shown in Fig. 1, the drive is from two places along the length of the crankshaft 1 through spur gearing the intermediate shaft 13 being geared to an aircraft propeller shaft 18. Modified constructions are described in which the wheels 11 and 12 are geared to separate intermediate shafts which transmit power to a single shaft or to concentric shafts. In Fig. 5 the crankshaft is shown divided, each half being geared to an intermediate shaft 27 or 30. The intermediate shafts may gear with concentric propelling shafts. In the construction shown in Fig. 10, wheels 34, 35 gear with the intermediate 36, the wheel 35 carrying an internally geared wheel 39 which forms part of an epicyclic gear through which the propeller shaft 18 is driven. The wheel 38 instead of engaging the wheel 35 may gear with a wheel located between the propeller and the epicyclic gear. Other constructions are described in which (1) two intermediate shafts are geared to a common wheel on the propeller shaft, a clutch being provided in each of the intermediate shafts; (2) A drive as shown in Fig. 10 is supplemented by a clutch in the intermediate shaft; and by a second clutch by which the crankshaft is engaged with the gear wheel 35 ; and (3) a drive having a gear wheel located between the propeller and the wheel 35 has clutches disposed in the intermediate shaft and between the crankshaft and an epicyclic gear.
