Abstract

588,194. Driving gear. WILSON, W. B., and SUTCLIFFE, R. U. Jan. 26, 1945, No. 2143. [Class 7 (ii)] In an engine in which two pistons of different diameter are acted on by the same impulse, the pistons are connected to a crank system so that the smaller piston leads the larger piston by an angle of between 60 degrees and 75 degrees. As shown, the two pistons 1, 2 are connected by rockers 22, 23 and rods 26, 27 to a crank shaft 16 having crank throws arranged so that the smaller piston 2 leads by an angle of 67.5 degrees, the valve timing being normal for the larger piston 1. The shaft 16 may be replaced by two shafts geared together and jointed to the rods 26, 27, independently.
