Abstract

572,749. Four-stroke engines; valve gear. AERO ENGINES, Ltd., and HALLIDAY, G. F. Feb. 22, 1944, No. 3304. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (vi)] A four-stroke cycle engine comprises cylinders A, B arranged in pairs with parallel axes but facing opposite directions, the pistons being connected to'crank-shafts 13a, 13b which are geared together. Two pairs of cylinders are described, forming a square engine, each crankshaft having two throws arranged at 180 degrees, but more cylinders in line may be employed. A common cam-shaft 27 drives corresponding valves in the two cylinders, the piston strokes being arranged diametrically opposite. 'The cam-shaft is driven directly from the main driving shaft of the engine which is geared to the crank-shafts. The cylinders comprise liners mounted in. a body casting 10 carrying heads at either end. The valves are operated by push rods 24 and rockers 22, and the two valves of each cylinder are urged to their closed position by a common torsion-bar spring device as described in Specification 553,616.
