Abstract
607,999. Engine charging. HUMBER, Ltd., MILLER, A. C., and OLIVER, W. T. Feb. 13, 1946, No. 4545. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (vi)] A four-stroke engine with. four cylinders 1 and a crank-shaft with four throws so that opposed pistons are working 360 degrees out of phase, has its crank-case divided into two air-tight compartments 9 and 10 so that on the down stroke of one pair of pistons, air, which entered the crank-case through the ports 15A during the upstroke, is compressed and enters the cylinder, through ports 17 and 18, which is just completing its normal inlet-stroke. The sleeve valves 11 are rotated at one-quarter engine speed and each contains two sets of transfer and exhaust ports 17 and 20 respectively which co-operate alternately with ports 18 and 21 in the cylinder wall. One sleeve of each pair of opposed pistons is also supplied with four sets of air inlet ports 15A. The normal mixture inlet valve 23 is held closed by a torsion bar 26 and is operated through a push-rod 28 by a cam 27 mounted on the outer end of the sleeve valve 11. The sleeves of adjacent cylinders are interconnected by gears 30, the sleeve nearest the nose of the engine being driven by a skew-gear which is mounted on a shaft parallel to the crank-shaft and is driven by either of the gears 37 or 38 which are driven by a gear 36 on the crank-shaft. Two gear-type fuel pumps, one for scavenge and one for pressure feeding, are also driven from the sleeve drive shafts and contain one small gear and one larger gear twice its size running at half engine speed, a four-lobed distributer 45 being driven from the larger gear.
