Abstract
184,761. Holmstr÷m, J. A. Aug. 18, 1921, [Convention date]. Addition to 122,635. Valves; valve-gear.-In engines built up of units comprising two or three cylinders having pistons connected to a common rod coupling two or more parallel cranks as described in the parent Specification, each unit is modified to compress air or combustible mixture in a common crank case or in the front ends of the cylinders. A three-cylinder unit works on a six-stroke cycle, the cylinders firing in succession, and each cylinder in turn receiving the whole of the charge from the pump or pumps. In the same way, a two-cylinder unit works on a four-stroke cycle. In a three-cylinder unit shown in Fig. 2, a charge of combustible mixture admitted to the crank case 12 through a rotary or other valve is transferred to the cylinders through a pipe 34 leading to rotary disc valves such as 24 in the cylinder heads, each provided with a split ring 32 and a wedge-shaped port 31, and driven directly or through pinion gearing from a shaft 23 connected by a gearing train 22, 21, 20, 19 with the crank-shaft. The valve 24 also controls the engine exhaust and the admission and exhaust of scavenging-air. When starting any of the engines described, one or more units only may be used.
