Abstract

190,756. Booth, J. T. Aug. 27, 1921. Valves; valve gear.-The admission of mixture to the pumping-cylinders 9 of a two-cylinder twostroke engine, and its delivery therefrom to a receiver 1 between the two cylinders, is controlled bv a reciprocating valve 5, and the transfer of the mixture from the receiver to the two working cylinders 1 alternately is controlled by another reciprocating valve 2. The inlet valve 5 is formed with two through-ports 11, 12, Figs. 2 and 3, serving as inlets to the two pumps, and with ports 14, 15 through which the mixture passes to the receiver. The valve 2 has two through-ports 19, 20 for connecting the receiver to the two working cylinders. The valves 2, 5 are driven by connecting-rods 21, 17 worked from cranks on the same shaft 7. In a modification, the two valves 2, 5 are coaxial and driven from two separate crank shafts, which are driven from the main shaft, preferably by an endless chain; or the two valves may be parallel. A four-cylinder engine is described in which only two of the cylinders are provided with pumping-chambers, a single piston valve being provided for controlling the inlet to the pumps and their delivery to two receivers, the transfer from which to the four cylinders is controlled by two other piston valves, one working in each receiver; the three valves are driven from a single crank shaft. The invention may be applied to single-cylinder engines.
