Abstract

150,581. Thomas, H. H. M., and Elverson, A. J. H. Dec. 10, 1919. Regulating; valves; valve-gear.-Combustible mixture is compressed in a crank-casing which discharges alternately . into a pair of cylinders arranged one on each side of a central crankshaft, or otherwise. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, charges are admitted to the crankchamber through a rotary valve 1, other rotary valves 3 being located in delivery pipes 4 which oach discharge into the cylinders through a pair of beat valves. The rotary valves 1, 3, which are driven at one-half the speed of the crank-shaft, may be surrounded by adjustable sleeves for throttling the charges admitted to or discharged from the crank-chamber. The valve-rods are arranged as shown in Fig. 1, a rod x actuating a pair of inlet valves through a lever 7, and a rod y an exhaust valve through a lever 11. The beat valves are held to their seats by leaf springs.
