Abstract

Valves; valve-gear. - In engines of the kind in which cylinders are arranged in pairs co-axially with two pistons on the same rod, the open ends of each pair are outward, the piston rod passing through packing rings y of wedge section adjusted bv wedgeshaped members tightened by screws z. The. casting contains two pairs of such cylinders and two pairs of rocking rotary valves f surrounded by rockmg sleeves h. The valve member has two sets cf six ports alternately connected by internal partitions 7 to the ends 9 of the valve casing for inlet, and to the inner chamber 10 for exhaust. The sleeve members h and casing g<1> have three ports each. The passages in the casing are oppositely disposed to cylinders on the same level and on the same axis, so as to obtain similar strokes in diagonally opposite cylinders simultaneously. The valve and sleeve are operated by eccentrics set at 90 degrees on a pair of shafts n, o, Fig. 2, parallel to the axis of the cylinders, or on a short shaft p, Fig. 3, bearing in a bridge across the end of the cylinder and driven by gearing r from a single shaft parallel to the cylinder axis. A gauze u is fitted over the outer ends of the cylinders to catch lubricant, which is led back by a passage v to the crank-case.
