Abstract

20,787. Sharp, A. Sept. 6. [Cognate Applications, 5368/11, 5575/11, and 8128/11.] Multipleacting piston pumps; eccentric - actuated pumps. - In radial - cylinder pumps, the connecting-rods R are jointed to a ring C which is constrained to move without rotation in a circle, the diameter of which is equal to the stroke of the pistons P, by cranks A, B, an Oldham coupling, or parallel jointed bars. The ring may drive, or be driven from, the shaft C through a crank F, Fig. 5, or through toothed wheels M, N, Fig. 2, the annular wheel being caried by the ring C, as shown, or by the shaft. The cylinders, which may be radial or oblique, are integral with, or secured to a ring casting K, and a crank chamber is formed in side disks 20 with bearings for the constraining cranks and shaft G bolted to the casting K. Holes, covered by removable plugs, are provided in the side disks to give access to the joints between the floating ring C and the connecting-rods. Inlet and exhaust passages 28, 29 may be formed in the casting K. Suitable balance masses H are provided on eccentrics on the shaft G, Fig. 2, or on extensions of the crank cheeks 15, or on the fly-wheels 55, Fig. 5. In the four-stroke internal-combustion engine shown in Fig. 5, the pistons P work in removable cylinders 31, having detachable hollow heads 32, secured by rings 33. The connecting-rods R are jointed at both ends to brakes by pins 39 lying in the plane of motion. The valves are actuated, through tappets 48, from a toothed cam wheel 46, which is driven at a reduced speed by an annular toothed wheel 44 connected to crank-pins 42 on the constraining crank-shafts. There are fifteen cylinders and seven cams on the the cam-wheel, which is rotated at one-fourteenth of the speed of the shaft G. In the case of a two-stroke engine, such as a steam, compressed air, or hydraulic engine, the valves may be actuated by cams or by rods jointed to a ring driven by eccentrics on the constraining crank-shafts. Several sets of cylinders may be arranged side by side in one casing, and units comprising sets of cylinders in common casings may be coupled together by clutch sleeves to be driven from one shaft, in such a way that a unit may be removed without disturbing the other units.
