Abstract
577,656. Semi-rotary engines. JOHNSEN, A. J. April 18, 1944, No. 7178. Convention date, April 20, 1943. [Class 110 (ii)] An internal-combustion engine operating on the two-stroke, or four-stroke cycle, comprises a part-spherical casing 1, a hemispherical piston 2, and a connecting rod 4 coupled to a crank-shaft 6. Packing 11 and springs 12, press the piston against the casing bore, thus compensating for wear. As a two-stroke engine, gas enters an inlet 15, passes through a transfer valve 19, is fired by a plug 20, expands and is exhausted through a port 16. Splash lubrication is obtained from oil contained in a sump 7. For a four-stroke engine, the ports 15, 16, are dispensed with, and inlet and exhaust valves are placed in the cylinder-heads of each working chamber on each side of the engine. No piston rings are provided.
