Abstract

434,612. Driving - gear. LOGANNEWVILLE MOTORS, Inc., 622, Washington Street, Cape May, New Jersey, U.S.A. April 4, 1934, No. 10176. Convention date, April 20, 1933. [Class 7 (ii)] [See also Group XXVI] Pistons 42 working in expansion or combustion chambers 12 are rigidly connected to pistons 44 working in cylinders 21 immersed in liquid in a tank 10. Air or other elastic medium occupies the space above the liquid in the tank. Fluid displaced by the piston 44 escapes through a valve 23, and returns or passes to a companion cylinder, through valved piping 35, 36, thus effecting the return stroke of the combined pistons, and through the engagement of ratchet and pawl, or of a rack 47 with a toothed quadrant 48, driving the shaft 46. A butterfly-valve in the housing 70 controls the admission of fluid to the cylinders 21 and is operated by linkwork from a cam on the shaft 77, while supplementary control may be effected by a manually or automaticallyoperated valve 78. In a modification, a spherical valve may replace the disc-valve 23, and the air &c. in the tank 10 may be separated from the fluid by confinement above a plunger in a cylinder. Instead of the rack 47 being offset from the axis of the cylinders, the shaft 46 may be placed to one side. The teeth of the quadrants 48 extend a tooth further than the driving effort of the rack is effective, thereby overlapping similar quadrants along the shaft. In the case of an internal-combustion engine air or mixture is compressed in cylinders 41 and transferred to and ignited in the cylinders 12. One pump cylinder may serve two explosion cylinders, and the spaces below the piston 42 and above the piston 44 may be utilized for compression. For cushioning purposes the piston 44 is made in two parts nesting conically one within the other and urged apart by a spring. Towards the upper end of its stroke the upper cone engages a stop. Oil leaking past the lower piston member collects in the recess between the cones and returns below the piston through non-return valves when the latter are opened as the two cones are pressed together at the upper end of their travel.
