Abstract

416,142. Air-compressors. RAE, J. P., Mirfield Motor Works, Nunbrook, Mirfield, Yorkshire. May 29, 1933, Nos. 15421 and 26261. [Class 8 (i).] Some or all of the units of a discarded internal-combustion engine are converted into air-compressor units by substituting a spring- loaded air inlet valve h for the sparking-plug or spring-loaded air delivering valve o connected to a compressed air reservoir t for the exhaust valve. The combustion space in the converted cylinders is filled in to a minimum by a metal block r. Where only some of the cylinders are converted, the remaining engine units are employed to drive the compressor. Where all the units are converted the compressor is driven from an external lower unit. To relieve the compressor from load when a determined pressure in the receiver t has been reached, a spring-loaded piston u<1> in the cylinder u communicating with the container is pressed back and causes the air inlet valves h to be held off their seats by the engagement of tappets x with inclined surfaces w<1> on a rod v<3> linked to the piston rod u<4>.
