Abstract

482,504. Lubricating internal - combustion engines ; reciprocating pumps. FOSTER, R. E. Oct. 12, 1937, No. 27644. [Class 12 (iii)] [Also in Group XXVIII] In an internal-combustion engine a measured quantity of lubricating oil is supplied to the cylinders at starting by means of a pump operated by' the engine suction. The discharge pipe 6 from the pump 1 may discharge directly into the cylinders or into the induction pipe 3. The pump 1 is connected by pipes 2a, 2b to the engine suction and a thermally operated valve 4 may be used so that the pump 1 operates only when the engine is cold. The pump has a pair of cylinders 11, 16, Fig. 3, with connected pistons 21, 19 biassed by a spring 24. Oil from the engine oil sump passes through a boss 12 into the space 18 and thence through a hole 17 into the cylinder 16. The space 25 below the piston 21 is connected to the engine suction and the space above the piston 21 is connected to atmosphere through a valve-controlled duct 33. When starting up the engine cold, the valve 4 opens the space 25 to the suction pressure so that the pistons 21, 19 descend and eject a charge of lubricant through a valve 28 to the engine cylinders. The speed of the stroke varies according to the size of the aperture 33. When the engine is stopped the pistons rise and are again operated when the engine is restarted provided the engine has cooled sufficiently to open the valve 4. The suction to the pump may be controlled manually instead of thermally.
