Abstract

279,275. Norton, W. A., and Villiers Engineering Co., Ltd. Dec. 20, 1926. Force-feed lubricating-In a lubricating system for a two-stroke internal-combustion engine having crank-case compression, wherein the intermittent compression in the crank case 10 is communicated through a pipe 15 to a sealed oil tank 2, oil in the tank is forced by the pressure up a pipe 7 to a sight-feed device 3, whence it passes to the engine bearings through a pipe 4 which is subjected to the intermittent suction in the crank case. The pipes 15, 4 are put into communication with the crank case during the periods of compression and suction therein respectively by means of passages 14, 24 leading to arcuate grooves 16, 25, Fig. 3, in one or more of the crankshaft bearings 12, which grooves are adapted to register respectively with radial passages 11, 23 in the crankshaft 8 leading from an axial passage 9 open to the interior of the crank case. The pipe 15 extends into the tank and contains a spring-pressed plunger 17 controlling a port 19, Fig. 2, leading to a pipe 20 extending to the top of the tank and also controlling, by an annular groove 170, a passage 22 connecting the pipe 7 with the inlet 6 to the sight-feed device. The passage 22 is provided with a needle valve 21. The supply of oil is thus automatically started and stopped with the starting and stopping of the engine. In a modification, the plunger 17 is omitted, a small leak port being provided between the top of the tank and the chamber of the sight-feed device for the relief of pressure from the tank when the engine stops.
