270,803. Booth, J. H., Sidwell, F. A., Smyth, W. P., and Booth, T. M. Feb. 12, 1926. Force - feed lubricating; liquid level, maintaining.-In an internal - combustion engine compressing its charge in the crank case, oil is supplied by a pump 11 through pipes 12, 13 to the crank shaft journals, and flows from thence into pits in the crank cases 4. These are connected through the orifices 17 and pipe 18 to a vessel 16, to which the pump also supplies some oil. The level of the oil in the crank cases is determined by a port 20 in a tube 19, Fig. 7, projecting into the vessel 16, oil flowing out through this port. The position of the tube and consequently the level of the oil in the crank case is adjustable, or as shown in Fig. 7, a spring-pressed piston in part closes the port 20 and thereby damps down the surges produced in the oil by the pressure variations in the crank cases.
