Abstract

338,183. Noble, W. Aug. 8, 1929. Force-feed lubricating; filtering lubricant.-In a radial-cylinder internal-combustion engine in which the valves are actuated by hydraulic valve gears supplied from the lubricating-system, leakage of oil past the valve stems 83, Fig. 15, into the spring casings 92 is removed through pipes 106 leading to a vacuum chamber 7, and the oil for the valve gears and the lubricating-system is drawn by a pump 30 from a tank 23 through a centrifuge 25, which separates impurities and air, and then passes through a valve 31 to a manifold 32 for the valve-gear cylinders 17. Excess oil from this manifold passes through a relief valve 33, from the bottom of which it returns to the vacuum chamber 7. A pipe 34 conducts oil to a thrust bearing 36 on the crank shaft, from which it escapes to the crank case 1 and flows through an opening 38 to a second centrifuge 41 arranged in connection with a pump 43, which returns the filtered oil through passages 44, 45 to the tank 23. A vacuum pump 48 is also provided to maintain a vacuum in the chamber 7, and in another chamber 47 at the end of the crank shaft. The rear engine bearing 8 is lubricated through a pipe 69 and passage 70, the oil passing also through a chamber 72 and passages 74, 76 to the crank pin.
