LUBRIGATION 0F GAM-SHAFTS FOB, INTERNAL-COMBUSTION ENGINES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented only 1, 1919.
Application filed July 23, 1918. Serial No. 246,332.
Engines, of which the following is a specification. 1
This invention relates to the lubrication of cam-shafts for internal combustion engines, which shafts are arranged over the engine cylinders or in any position other than in the crank chamber, and are inclosed by a, casing. On aircraft engines in particular trouble is caused by the escape of lubricating oil from the casing of the camshaft by way of the apertures through which pass the valve tappets or the like.
The object of the present invention is to prevent the aforesaid escape of oil and for this purpose the invention comprises the provision of an air or oil pump acting on passages in communication with the apertures through which pass the said valve tappets or the like.
In the accompanying sheet of explanatory drawings Figure 1 is an end "section and Fig. 2 a
front elevation showing diagrammatically one manner of carrying the invention into effect. Fig. 3 is a section showing to a larger scale than Figs. 1 and 2 a valve tappet and oil drainage passage.
An air or oil pump a is arranged with its outlet in communication with an engine crank chamber. The pump is also connected by a suction pipe 0 to a pipe (0 in communication with the glands d of the valve tappets 6. By such an arrangement oil escaping pastthe valve tappets from the cam shaft casing b is sucked away and returned to the engine crank case. Leakage of oil past the lower ends of the glands is thus prevented.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In internal combustion engines, the combination comprising a cam-shaft inclosing casing, glands in said casing, valve tappets passing through said glands, pipes in communication with said glands, and a pum by which oil is continuously withdrawnfrom said glands through said pipes, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
LOUIS COATALEN.
