Abstract
221,699. Bull, G. L. Nov. 24, 1923. Valve gear. - In fluid - actuated valve gear in which the fluid is distributed by a rotary valve to pistons connected to the engine valves, the timing of the engine valves is altered by angular adjustment of t h e rotary valve. The inlet and exhaust valves 4, 5 are provided with pistons 8, 9 working in cylinders 6, 7 connected by pipes 39, 40 to a rotary valve 32, which is further provided with outlet pipes 43, 44 leading to the crank case sump and with inlet pipes 37, 38 leading to a tank 17, to which the oil in the sump is forced by a pump 14. The pipes 39, 40 have branches 41, 42 connected to the valve 32 in line with the outlets 43, 44, the pipes 39, 40 themselves being connected to the valve in line with the inlets 37, 38. In this way, the pipes 39, 40 are alternately connected by ports 45, 46 in the rotary valve to the inlet and outlet passages for the oil, whereby the pistons 8, 9 are actuated. For adjusting the rotary valve 32, it is mounted on a sleeve 21 which is loose on the driving-shaft 22 and abuts against a shoulder 23 thereon, and an axially adjustable clutch 26 is provided with pins 27, 28, Fig. 5, engaging helical and straight slots 24, 25 in the parts 21, 22 respectively.
