Abstract

578,940. Valve gear. BRIGGS MANUFACTURING CO. Aug. 10, 1944, No. 15237. Convention date, July 29, 1943. [Class 7 (vi)] A rotary valve 20, containing a combustion chamber 21, is driven from a worm wheel 40, mounted on a crankshaft 16, through a worm 39, shaft 35 substantially parallel to the cylinder axis, gear 34, and gear 33 mounted on the outer end of the stem 20a of the rotary valve. The engine may have any number of cylinders. In the case shown there are two horizontally opposed cylinders 10, and the two valve driving shafts 35 are in axial alignment and are driven by a single worm 39 meshing with the worm wheel 40 mounted between the crank throws 15. The fuel charge is delivered to an intake pipe 26 leading to an intake passage 25 for each cylinder after passing through a butterfly throttle valve 32, a choke valve 31, a short transverse passage 30, and an intake passage 27 extending through an oil reservoir 28 contained within a housing 29 secured to the bottom of a crank case 11. An oil pump 41 is driven by a gear 41a meshing with the worm 39. Oil is returned to the sump through return pipes 42.
