Abstract
419,550. Valve gear. WESTON, S. B., The Summerhouse, Burntwood, near Lichfield, Staffordshire. July 10, 1933, No. 19443. [Class 7 (vi).] Hydraulic valve gear comprises cams 19, 20 acting through rockers 25, 25A upon pistons 29 working in cylinders 23, 23A having connections 40 to smaller pistons acting on the valves, the pistons 29 sliding within sleeves 26 which are formed with the fluid inlet ports 37 and, as wear of the rockers occurs at 32, 33, are moved progressively outwards by contact of the pistons 29 with the sleeves on their return strokes, effected by springs 31. The relation of the pistons 29 to the inlet ports 37 in the sleeves is thus kept constant under all conditions of wear and temperature. The port 37 is supplied with oil from passages 34, 35, 38 and overflow may take place at 41 to the engine sump. The lobes of the cams 19, 20 commence with a tangential slope at E and end with an inverse curve at F. An air vessel may be fitted to the oil supply to the valve gear. In a modification, two concentric face-cams actuate two sets of pistons for working the inlet and exhaust valves respectively of a multicylinder engine. The invention may be applied to piston or sleeve valves, as well as to poppet valves, and a second set of pistons may be provided to effect a positive closing of the valves, in place of the usual springs.
