Abstract
221,841. Bonner, C. E. May 15, 1923. Valve gear.-In an engine of the kind having a rotary sleeve valve 28 mounted between inner and outer cylinders 30, 12, the gear teeth 27 at the bottom of the sleeve valve are cut within the thickness of the valve, so that the latter may be withdrawn upwards without disturbing the driving-gear. The teeth 27 engage a worm wheel on the same shaft as a pinion 24, which is driven by gearing 22, 23 from the crank shaft. Valves.-The sleeve valve 28 is stepped at 40 41, and the liner 30 is flanged at 31 and is recessed at 50 between the inlet and exhaust ports. These ports are arranged with their lower edges below the top of the piston 19 when this is at its upper dead centre, and so that the piston rings 48 never come above the lower edge of the ports. The lower end of the liner extends through a centring-flange 68. The valve is formed of a metal having a coefficient of expansion which is lower than that of the outer cylinder, and greater than that of the liner.
