Abstract

189,187. Yeo, O. E., and Edwards, W. F. M. Aug. 18, 1921. Valves.-A. rotary sleeve valve for a four-stroke engine is provided with a row of ports g at its upper end controlling inlet and exhaust ports q, p in the cylinder, and with a similar row of ports h controlling inlet and exhaust ports q<1>, p<1> at the other end of the stroke. The ports are so arranged that the upper inlet ports are opened on the commencement o f the suction stroke, and are closed, and the lower inlet ports opened, at the bottom of the stroke. Similarly, the exhaust ports at the lower end are opened at the end of the working stroke, and the upper ones are opened slightly later for the exhaust stroke. The upper end of the sleeve valve is made conical and bears at f in a groove in the cylinder head; it may also be formed with a shoulder bearing on a ring n adjustable by means of screws o. Instead of the conical head, the cylindrical walls of the sleeve may extend straight upwards into the groove in the cylinder head. Valve-gear.-The sleeve valve is rotated by bevel gearing i, k, k<2>, k<3> and worm gearing k<5>, k<6>.
