Abstract

139,397. Shannon, J. W. July 3, 1919. Valves; valve-gear.-In an internal-combustion engine having a single rotary valve co-axial with the cylinder, and provided with packing-rings for preventing leakage through the exhaust and inlet ports, the valves 12 for each pair of adjacent cylinders are driven at a quarter of the speed of the crank-shaft by gearing from a vertical shaft 15, rotated by helical gear from a shaft 19 driven by a chain 18 from the crank-shaft 7. The ports 13, 14 in the valve 12 are diametrically opposite, and the inlet and exhaust ports in the cylinder are provided with movable rings 25, fitted with packing-rings 31, which are forced outward against the valve on the firing or compression stroke and drawn inward on the auction stroke. In a modification, Fig. 7, the ring 33 is located in a recess in the cylinder, the space beneath the ring communicating with the cylinder by three holes 35, 36, 37 formed in the wall, and the lip on the cylinder serving to protect the valve from excessive heating.
