Abstract

368,125. Lubricating internal-combustion engines. FORD MOTOR CAR CO., Ltd., 88, Regent Street, London.- (Assignees of Smith, C. J. ; 264, Garrison Avenue, Dearborn, Michigan, U.S.A.) April 20, 1931, No. 11717. Convention date, May 26, 1930. [Classes 12 (ii) and 12 (iii).] Oil is distributed under pressure to the bearings of an internal-combustion engine from a common manifold formed by a horizontal groove 40 in the cylinder block casting 10, which groove is closed by a cover-plate. The groove is formed just below the valve chamber 17 and the cover-plate 41 of the latter is extended so as to serve also as a closure for the groove. A port 47, Fig. 4, in one end of the groove discharges surplus oil on to the timing gear 23, the port being so restricted that when the oil is cold the pressure in the manifold increases. Oil is supplied from the engine sump by a gear pump 37, Fig. 2, the vertical driving shaft 38 of which passes through a tubular member 35, the upper end of which is mounted in a vertical bore 31 in the block 10. The pump housing 36 is pressed upwards by a spring 39. The shaft 38 is coupled to a shaft 29 driven from the cam shaft 22 by gears 27, 28 and journalled in a spring-pressed bearing 30 mounted in the bore 31 so as to maintain the gears 27, 28 in mesh. The pump 37 discharges through the clearance between the shaft 38 and tube 35 into the bore 31, whence the oil enters the groove 40 through an opening 43. From the groove 40, oil passes to the cam shaft end bearings through drilled conduits 44, while the centre bearing is flooded from the bore 31. The cam shaft journals are formed with annular grooves 45 and oil is led to the bearings of the crank shaft 21 through drilled conduits 46 registering with the grooves 45.
