Abstract

193,172. Juckes, T. C., (trading as Efficient Motor & Engineering Co.). Nov. 24, 1921. Channels and reservoirs in engine crank casings.-In a non- pressure lubricating system for internalcombustion engines, there is provided an intermediate reservoir from which lubricant passes to the bearings and sumps through passages which communicate with the rear part of the reservoir, so that the flow is increased or diminished according to the direction in which the engine is tilted. In an engine mounted with its shaft transverse to the line of travel, the intermediate reservoir 1, supplied by a pipe 9, is formed near the forward upper edge of the crank-case. Oil passes from the reservoir 1 through passages 3 extending across the top of the casing, and thence through passages 4 extending down through the end walls 5 to the bearings 6, from the ends of which it passes by passages 7 to the sump 8. The passages 3 lead from the reservoir some little distance above the base thereof, so that the reservoir normally retains a small quantity of oil. Oil may be pumped from the sump 8 back to the reservoir 1. In the case of a two-stroke-cycle engine, the transfer passage is arranged to open near the centre of one end of the crank-case. As shown, the transfer passage 12 is formed in two parts separated by a web 13 and extending through the ends of the crank-case to openings 14 disposed near the centre. Alternatively, the crank-shaft may be formed hollow to serve as the transfer passage, the gases passing out through the end or through holes to a passage or external pipe leading to the cylinder.
