Abstract
368,066. Lubricating internal-combustion engines. PACKARD MOTOR CAR CO., Detroit, Michigan, U.S.A. March 5, 1931, No. 6934. Convention date, April 3, 1930. [Classes 12 (ii) and 12 (iii).] Cooling lubricant.-A pump A, Fig. 5, draws oil from the sump of an internal-combustion engine through a pipe 95 and returns it through pipes 97, 99 and a cooler 98 to a tank 100, whence it flows through a pipe 101 in part to a pump B, which supplies the engine bearings through a pipe 70 and is provided with a relief valve 103 delivering through a passage 102 to the pipe 97, and in part through a passage 104 to a pump C delivering through a passage 105 into the pipe 97, whereby the flow through the cooler is increased without increasing the supply to the engine. The invention is described as applied to a radial-cylinder Diesel engine, the cylinders 12, Fig. 1, of which are secured to the crank case 10 by rings 14 and are provided with combined air-inlet and exhaust valves 19 actuated through rockers by push rods 24 and with fuel-injection nozzles 21 supplied by pumps 22 actuated by push rods 25. The rods 24, 25 are operated by rockers 62, 63 co-operating with a cam wheel 47 and mounted on hollow shafts 60 supported by a transverse partition 26 which divides the casing into twochambers 27, 28. The wheel 47 is journalled on a sleeve 44 mounted on the crank shaft 33 and is driven from the latter through gearing 53, 54, 57. The gear pumps A, B, C, mounted in a housing 108, are driven from the gear 54 through a gear 107. Oil is supplied by the pipe 70 to the interior of the uppermost shaft 60, whence it passes through a port 68<1> into a radial passage 67 in the partition 26 and through an annular groove 68 into similar, but smaller, radial passages 67 in the partition, whence it has access to the other hollow shafts 60. These shafts 60 have ports 71 whereby the oil has access to the rockers 62, 63, and the latter have ports through which oil passes on to the cam wheel. Oil also passes from the uppermost passage 67 through a port 73 and a swivel connection 79 into an annular groove 77 in a ring 76 around the hub 46 of the wheel 47, whence it passes through ports and grooves in the hub 46 and sleeve 44 into an annular recess 48 in the latter, whence it passes into the interior of the crank shaft through ports 83 and thence through a passage 84 into the hollow crank pin 34. From the latter the oil passes to the master bigend 39 through a passage 88, whence it passes through grooves 89 and pairs of radial passages 90 to the interior of the pins 41 of adjacent auxiliary big-ends, which receive oil through passages 91. Oil passes to the pins 37 of pivoted counterweights through conduits 85, 86. Some of the oil thrown out of the bearings passes to the front crank shaft bearings 30, 31 through a passage 92, and oil collecting in the chamber 27 passes through an opening 94 to the chamber 28, whence it is withdrawn through the pipe 95.
