Abstract

820,878. Force-feed lubricating. CONTINENTAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Oct. 30, 1957 [Nov. 5, 1956], No. 33848/57. Class 12(3). A lubricating system for an internal-combustion engine comprises a fine filter 17 and a coarse filter 16, arranged either in parallel or in series, and means whereby the output from the coarse filter 16 is connected to the circuit adjacent the outlet from the fine filter 17 when the latter becomes clogged. During normal operation of the parallel arrangement, shown in Fig. 1, oil from a reservoir 14 is fed by a pump 15 to the main crank-shaft bearings 11 of the engine 10 through the coarse filter 16 and conduits 26, 27 and is also fed to a fuel injection pump 12 and exhaust gas turbine 13 through a fine filter 17 and conduits 28, 30. When the fine filter 17 becomes clogged, the pressure in the conduit 28 forces a piston 36 to the left, and this causes a second piston 38, connected to the piston 36 by a rod 37, to selectively open communication between passages 27 and 30 through passages 40, 41. A non-return valve 29 prevents flow of oil from the coarse filter 16 through the fine filter 17. A passage 39 connects the outlet from the filter 17 with the cylinder containing the piston 38 and a light spring 43 acts on the opposite side of the piston 38. A by-pass passage 45 is provided around the coarse filter 16 and it is fitted with a safetyvalve 46 which opens when the filter 16 becomes clogged allowing unfiltered oil to pass to the engine. Fig. 2 shows the series arrangement in which oil from the reservoir 14 normally passes through the coarse filter 16, conduits 62, 63, fine filter 17 and passage 65 to the fuel injection pump 12 and exhaust gas turbine 13. When the fine filter 17 becomes clogged the flow passes through a by-pass 72.
