Abstract

940,909. Lubricating. DAIMLER-BENZ A.G. Sept. 8, 1961 [Sept. 8, 1960], No. 32357/61. Heading F2A. [Also in Division F1] A prelubrication arrangement for an engine comprises a main lubricating circuit 14, Fig. 1, fed by an engine-driven oil pump 10, a prelubricating circuit 18 fed by a prelubricating pump 16 from a reservoir 11 and a pressureresponsive safety device 25 operated by the pressure in the prelubricating circuit and which cuts off the fuel supply when a predetermined oil pressure is not attained and releases the fuel supply when a predetermined oil pressure is exceeded, the safety device being disposed in a secondary passage connected to the prelubricating circuit. The engine is lubricated before starting by pump 16, driven by an electric motor or auxiliary engine, which feeds oil through an adjustable-pressure non-return valve 19 and filter 15 to the main circuit 14 and also through a secondary circuit 22 which has a filter 23 and non-return valve 24. Rise of pressure opens non- return valve 24, closes non-return valve 28 in an extension 26 of the main circuit and moves a piston 29 against a spring 30 to release the fuel supply by moving a fuel injection pump control rod 32. At the same time, rise of pressure in passage 26 causes a switch 27 to actuate the engine starter. During normal running an engine-driven pump 10 supplies the main circuit 14 at an increased pressure which closes non- return valves 19 and 24 and opens non-return valve 28, thus allowing the prelubrication pump to be switched off. In a modification valve 28 may have a permanently open small aperture. In another embodiment non-return valves 24, 28 are replaced by an electromagnetically controlled three-way valve 35, Fig. 2. The prelubrication pump 16 is started by closing switch 38 to close an electromagnetic switch 37 thus energizing the pump and moving the valve 32 to connect passage 22 to the safety device 25. When the main lubricating circuit is in operation, switch 38 is opened and a spring (not shown) moves valve 35 to connect passage 26 to the safety device 25. A narrow branch pipe 40 feeds other engine lubricating points e.g. regulators.
