Abstract
874,522. Clutch control. DAIMLERBENZ A.G. Nov. 17, 1958 [Nov. 15, 1957], No. 36944/58. Class 80 (2). Engagement of an automatic separating clutch 12 between an engine-driven hydraulic coupling 11 and a change-speed gear 13 on a motor vehicle trips a switch 26 which through relays 29, 25 moves a valve member 21 whereupon torque-increasing additional fuel and air is admitted, independently of the normal fuel control, to the engine 10 to prevent clutch shock. Injection or carburetter engines may be so controlled. In Fig. 1, engaging movement of the clutch 12 is transmitted through a member 27 and spring 28 to close the switch 26 which, provided the switch 30 is closed (i.e. a gear is engaged), completes the circuit of the relay 29 to energize the relay 25 which moves right, against a spring 22, a piston 21 opening a port 19 which admits additional air to the induction manifold, the pressure change in which acts on a pneumatic governor 16 of a fuel pump 15 to supply additional fuel to the engine. When the clutch is disengaged the piston is returned by the spring 22 cutting-off this additional fuel supply. The air opening 19 may be an adjustable nozzle or interchangeable nozzles of different sizes may be used. The timing of the opening of the switch 26 may be adjustable which adjustment may be simultaneous with the clutch adjustment. In Fig. 2 (not shown), the inlet is opened by the spring 22, the air passing through bores in the piston and closed by energization of the relay 25 (Fig. 1), on de-energization of the relay 29 (Fig. 1).
