Abstract

1359061 Spray carburettors FORD MOTOR CO Ltd 10 May 1972 [6 July 1971] 21714/72 Heading F1B A throttle valve 22 in the induction passage 16 has at least three positions 34, 36, 37 determined by a closure limiting plunger 64. An idling passage 26 has a discharge orifice 30 which opens upstream of the valve 22 in the closed position 34. The plunger diaphragm 46 is subjected to the vacuum downstream of the valve 22 and a spring 80 urges the plunger 64 to position the valve in the position 37. A solenoid 82 has a spring-biased armature 84 which is projected to the position 86 when the engine ignition is switched-on to determine the normal idling position 36 of the valve 22, the diaphragm piston 60 abutting the armature 84. In operation, with the engine stationary and the ignition switched-off the spring 80 urges the plunger 64 to position the valve 22 in the position 37 against the action of the spring 40 for starting. During starting, the vacuum buildsup in the diaphragm chamber 50 at a rate determined by a restriction 94 and a vacuum reservoir 96 and the diaphragm 46 moves until the piston 60 abuts the projected armature 84 and the valve 22 is moved by the spring 40 to the idling position 36. When the engine ignition is switched-off the armature 84 is withdrawn and the vacuum in the chamber 50 causes the plunger to be moved and permit the spring 40 to close the valve 22 and prevent the engine running-on. After a period determined by the restriction 94 and reservoir 96 the vacuum in chamber 50 decays sufficiently for the spring 80 to cause the valve 22 to be moved to the position 37. When the valve 22 is opened beyond the position 37 the spring 68 moves the plunger 64 relative to the piston 60 and the vacuum in the chamber (50) is released through piston passage 62 and passages 78 around the piston. On deceleration the valve 22 is retained in position 37 until the vacuum in chamber 50 has been established after sealing of the piston 60 on the O-ring 74. In a modification, Fig.3 (not shown), the limiting plunger (88) is connected directly to the diaphragm 46.
