Abstract

1293835 Preventing running on in I C engines; stop gear FORD MOTOR CO Ltd 4 Dec 1970 [12 Dec 1969] 57674/70 Headings F1B and F1K A spark ignition I.C. engine comprises a passage 24 supplying idling fuel to an induction passage 12 downstream of a throttle 14 and a "running-on" prevention mechanism in which air is transmitted from a container 30 to the idling passage when the ignition system is turned off so that the air reduces the idling fuel supply. Solenoid 62 is energized during normal operation so that valve rod 54 is magnetically held to lower seat 46. Intake manifold pressure via pipe 39 draws spring-loaded piston 32 to the position shown and the idling fuel is drawn from well 22 via jet 26, passage 24 and orifice 28 into the passage 12. When the switch 66 is opened to cut off the ignition circuit valve rod 54 is pressed on to seat 50 and the increased intake manifold pressure permits spring 37 to move piston 32 upwardly forcing the air in chamber 34 through passage 48 into the idling passage 24 where it reduces the fuel flow through jet 26 thereby stopping the engine. In a modification a check-valve is included in passage 52 and valve rod 54 moves on to only one seat.
