Abstract

1,216,462. Spray carburetters. JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd. Jan. 3, 1968 [Oct. 7, 1966], No. 44897/66. Heading F1B. Fuel is supplied to one or more nozzles 14 in an intake manifold 10 with an air throttle valve 13 from a pump 15 through a throttle valve 21 operated, by a manifold air temperature responsive device 33. A spill passage 41, 42 upstream of the valve 21 contains a valve member 39, 40 operated by a manifold air-pressure capsule 43 and a capsule having an evacuated compartment 44 and a compartment 46 communicating with the engine exhaust system. A valve 30 in the supply passage to the nozzle 14 is operated by a diaphragm 29 subjected on opposite sides to the fuel pressures downstream of the valves 21 and 39, 40. The pressure downstream of the valve 21 is a function of engine speed, the centrifugal pump 15 being driven through gearing 16 by the engine. To provide excess fuel for starting the flow through the valve 21 may be increased by manually releasing the sleeve 25 which normally partially obstructs the valve aperture 24. The fuel flow to the nozzle 14 may be shut-off by manually closing the valve 30. The flow through the spill passage may be restricted by a fuel temperature responsive device 51 orafixed restriction. At starting fuel may be supplied from the reservoir 17 through the filter 18 by a gear pump 52 with a pressure-relief by-pass valve 54. The nozzle 14 is upstream of a turbo super-charger 11.
