Abstract

999,786. Regulating I.C. engines. BORG-WARNER CORPORATION. Dec. 5, 1961 [Dec. 22, 1960], No. 43579/61. Heading F1B. In an idle control mechanism for an I.C. engine fuel injection system having an airintake manifold 39 and an air throttle valve 52, a manifold pressure responsive servomotor 13 moves a member 24, connected to control the output of a fuel metering device 11 and an idle enrichment servomotor 14 including a flexible diaphragm 42 responsive to a differential pressure determined by the air throttle valve position exerts a force tending to increase fuel delivery when the engine is running during closed throttle condition. Air-intake manifold pressure during normal running is transmitted through conduit 37 to cavity 31 and the differential pressure across diaphragm 32 tends to move shaft 24 and cam 20 to the left against the action of spring 34 to reduce the output of fuel injection pump 11. During idling with air-throttles 51, 52 closed, the pressure upstream of valve 52 is communicated via port 61, cavity 58 and conduit 49 to cavity 41 so that the differential pressure across diaphragm 42 tends to move plunger 43 to increase fuel output. When valve 52 is opened the pressures at ports 60, 61 are substantially the same as the air -intake manifold pressure so that the differential pressure across diaphragm 42 is removed and the idle enrichment servomotor becomes inoperative.
