Abstract

781,865. Oil filters. FRAM CORPORATION. Dec. 20, 1955 [June 10, 1955], No. 19562/56. Divided out of 781,864. Class 46. [Also in Group XXVII] In an I.C. engine having two adjacent rows of cylinders, e.g. as in a V-8 engine, the cylinders of one row being staggered relatively to those of the other row so that one row extends beyond the other, an oil filter casing 53 housing a filter cartridge 60 and comprising a hollow shell formed as an integral casting of an engine block 59 is located in the recess thus available at the non-protruding end of a row of cylinders. As shown, the interior of the casing 53 is rectangular and the cartridge 60 surrounds a bolt 61 holding a cover 54 in place. Oil from a pump flows through a port 62, enters the casing via a passage 63, passes through the filter and then flows through a passage 64 to a port 65 leading to the engine bearings. A by-pass valve 66 adapted to open when the oil pressure is excessive comprises a disc opening against the action of a spring.
