344,768. Lubricating. FIAT SOC. ANON., 250, Via Nizza, Turin, Italy. Aug. 26, 1930, No. 25465. Convention date, Aug. 31, 1929. [Class 12 (iii).] Force-feed lubricating; filtering lubricant.-In a lubricating system for an internal-combustion engine, oil drawn from a sump 3 is forced by a pump 2 through a pipe 4, passage 5, and pipe 7 into a chamber 9 wherein heavy impurities are deposited. A wire gauze or perforated disc filter 11 is mounted in the top of the chamber 9 and a perforated sleeve 15 having an outer covering consisting of a number of fabric rings 17 pressed together by a spring 19 is arranged between the chamber 9 and an enclosing casing 19a. The oil rising from the chamber 9 through the filter 11 passes downwards along the wall of the casing 19a and through the filter 17 into the interior of the sleeve 15, whence it passes to the lubricating conduit 25 through a passage 21 and a pipe 23 arranged eccentrically around the pipe 4. A spring-pressed valve 31 opens to by-pass the filter 17 if the pressure exceeds a predetermined amount. A spring-pressed relief valve 41 discharging to the sump 3 communicates with the outlet from the filters. The passages 5, 21 and the housing 29 of the valve 31 are cast integral with the cylinder block or are formed in a member 6 attached thereto.
