Abstract
787,408. Filters. DAIMLER-BENZ AKT.- GES. May 9, 1955 [May 10, 1954], No. 13421/55. Class 46. [Also in Group XXXIV] In a lubricating system for an internal combustion engine a fine filter 12, Fig. 1, preferably a micro-filter, a by-pass 19 with a constricted cross-section 18, and a pressure relief valve 17 are arranged to afford three branch passages which are in parallel with one another and which reunite in the lubrication circuit. The relief valve may be constructed to provide itself the constricted by-pass, the valve 28, as shown in Fig. 4, being formed with a constricted bore 26 through which oil can pass even though the valve is closed. In a modification the seat of the ball valve has two narrow slots which permit the oil to escape past the valve. The by-pass and relief valve may both be mounted within the filter housing as shown in Fig. 5, a filter element 29 being provided in series with a micro-filter 30, the interior of which is filled with paper-like material. In the filter 29 the liquid passes through very narrow gaps between annular discs or turns of a flat helix. A relief valve 45 is provided between the inlet 33 and the outlet 34, and a second relief valve 47 is arranged in parallel with the filter 30. A constricted bore 48 is connected in parallel with the relief valve 45, and this bore may be made adjustable by the provision of a screw-threaded needle. A constricted bore 48<SP>1</SP> may be provided in addition to, or instead of, the constricted bore 48.
