Abstract

Liquid under pressure is passed through a filter screen inside a filter element casing. If the screen becomes choked so that pressure drop through the screen reaches a predetermined level, incoming liquid bypasses the screen to pass to the casing outlet via a pressure relief valve, which is a non-return flap valve with resiliently closed lips in the form of a split ducks bill made of elastomeric material. Device is used as a small filter for liquids, esp. a lubricating oil filter for internal combustion engines. Unfiltered oil continues to flow in the engine lubricating circuit if the element becomes too choked for oil to pass through.
