Abstract

1355832 Oil filter AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS Ltd 20 March 1972 [30 March 1971 17 Dec 1971] 8182/71 and 58779/71 Heading B1D An oil filter for use in an I.C. engine comprises a two-part housing 41, 48 (Fig. 1) of plastics material and containing an annular filter element 50 the interior of which is in communication with a fluid outlet 44 formed as a threaded tubular projection and the exterior of which is in comunication with a fluid inlet formed as a hole 47 between the fluid outlet 44 and a sealing ring 46 for sealing between the filter and the engine to which it is attached. One end 54 of the filter element has no rigid supporting plate and is carried directly by the end wall 48 of the housing. The other end of the filter element seals against an annular plate 53 spaced from the end of the housing. Sealing means 52 is provided to prevent oil by-passing the filter element. A non-return valve 56 formed by flexible flange 57 is mounted in the path between the inlet and the filter. In the embodiment of Fig. 3 the housing part 64 carries a helically slotted tube 62 integral with its end wall 63, the tube acting as an internal support for the filter element 65. Flexible annular flanges 81 provides the non-return inlet valve. A pressure-released by-pass valve is provided by slots 71 which are in communication with inlet 79 but are prevented from communication with outlet 63 by washer 73 which is urged sealingly upwards by spring 75. The outlet passage 68 may be extended by an imperforate tube 85 of the housing to be used with end 67 facing downwardly.
