Abstract

1503295 Oil filter SOC ANON D B A 29 Sept 1976 [15 Oct 1975] 40442/76 Heading B1D An I.C. engine oil filter comprises a cuplike housing whose open end is swaged round the edge of closure plate 14 and extends beyond it to provide a peripheral flange against which a gasket 18 is held under radial compression. The gasket seals the filter against an engine block in use. The outer or inner face or peripheral edge of plate 14 has one or more notches into which the housing wall is deformed to prevent the plate rotating. Plate 14 has spaced inlets 22, cooperating with non-return valve 24, central threaded outlet 20 and may carry a flange engaging the inner periphery of gasket 18. The housing encloses an annular pleated paper filter element 26 whose inner periphery is supported by helical spring 45, which normally holds a by-pass valve member 40 in a position closing opening 41 in the element end plate 30. Member 40 comprises a metal disc with a central elastomeric pad 42, engaging the opening periphery and apertures 46 which allow oil from opening 41 to flow past the valve member towards outlet 20 when the valve member has been raised by differential pressure. Apertures 46 may be omitted, since the folds in the filter element will allow flow up passage 36. Fig. 3 (not shown) illustrates an alternative one-piece plastics valve member.
