Abstract

982,466. Filters for liquids. GENERAL MOTORS Ltd. Aug. 15, 1963 [Aug. 16, 1962], No. 31462/62. Heading B1D. A resilient seal member 25, Figs. 2 and3, has an integral radial flange 28 which serves as a non-return valve by covering inlet openings 10 in an end plate 4 of a one-handed screw-on filter 2, except when oil at sufficient pressure is flowing therethrough. A by-pass relief valve is also provided consisting of a resilient axial neck 26, forming part of the seal member 25, and a stationary tubular member 30 having castellations 32, the spaces between which permit the by-pass flow when the neck 26 is deflected. In Fig. 1 the relief valve consists of a resilient annulus 19 and an enclosing metal wall 17 with perforations 18. In Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown) the castellations 32 of Fig. 3 are provided on the seal member 25, and the stationary member is of metal and of inverted L-shape in section. Several alternative constructions of sealing device for the lower end of the element 1, which also ensure slight axial compression of the member 25, are depicted.
