Abstract

1450395 Oil filters GENERAL MOTORS Ltd 13 Dec 1973 [14 Dec 1972] 57659/72 Heading BID An oil filter comprises an annular pleated resin impregnated paper filter element 2 having at one end a seal member 30 which engages casing 1 and at the other end, an annular member 23, and a spring 36 which, when the filter is not in use, urges the filter element 2 upwards so that face 24 and flange 26 of member 23 engage cover 3. In use, the oil enters through openings 10, forces flange 26 downwards and flows inwardly through the filter element 2 to outlet 4. If the pressure drop across the filter element 2 increases e.g. due to the use of viscous oil or clogging of the element 2, the member 23 and filter element 2 are forced downwardly against the spring 36 to open up a bypass passage between the member 23 and neck 5. The filter may have an antidrain tube 39.
