Abstract
458,662. Four - stroke engines. HICKEY, H. J., 624, North Alexandria Street, Los Angeles, U.S.A. March 18, 1935, No. 8414. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (vi)] Cylinder ports; valves.-Inlet passages 16, 17 in the cylinder are controlled by a piston valve 5, and exhaust passages 18, 19 by a piston valve 6, the passages 17 and 19 being uncovered by the piston during the first half of the stroke. The inlet and exhaust passages in the cylinder preferably diverge outwardly, so as to coincide with pairs of ports 5a, 5b and 6a, 6b, in the valves. The exhaust valve is fitted with a steel lining 23, and the inlet valve works over a sleeve extension 21 of the inlet manifold 22. Annular recesses 5<c>, 6<c> are formed around the valves and serve to balance the pressures acting thereon, packing-rings 45, Fig. 2, being provided on each side of the recesses. On the compression stroke, the mixture is compressed into the passages 16 .. 19 and the recesses 5<c>, as well as into the cylinder clearance, and on the working stroke, the compressed charge in the lower ports 17, 19 enters after the first explosion, and gives rise to a second explosion. The valves are driven at one-fourth engine speed. Lubricating.-Oil is supplied to the hollow wrist pins 34 of the valve pistons through passages 30 .. 36 and from thence to the rear of the packing-rings 45 by passages 41 .. 44, the return to crank case being by passages 46.
