Abstract

532,177. Force-feed lubrication. SOC. ANON. S.P.I.C.A. SOC. POMPE INIEZIONE CASSANI AFFINI. Aug. 18, 1939, No. 23911. Convention date, Aug. 18, 1938. [Class 12 (iii)] Oil is supplied under pressure from a separate reservoir to the oil circulating system of an engine or machine at starting. In the internal combustion engine shown in Fig. 1 oil is withdrawn from opposite ends of the sump 16 by scavenging pumps 3, 4 to a reservoir 5 from which it is supplied by a pump 2 to the engine lubrication system through a pipe 7 having a branch pipe 8 connected to a reservoir 9 containing oil under the pressure of air supplied past a spring-pressed check valve 11 through a pipe 10 fitted with a stop valve 15. Oil is consequently supplied to the engine from a reservoir 9 until the pressure produced by the pump 2 exceeds that in the reservoir 9. The pipe 19 connecting the pumps 3, 4 to the reservoir 5, may be fitted with a cylinder 28, Fig. 2, containing a spring- pressed hollow piston 21 formed with ports 23, 24 so arranged that when the engine is started the dirty oil lying at the bottom of the sump passes through the port 23 to a storage reservoir 26. As the pressure rises and cleaner oil begins to be pumped the piston moves to close the port 23 and bring the port 24 into communication with the reservoir 5. The reservoir 5 is provided with an air vent 20.
