[Class 12 (iii)] [Also in Groups XXVII and XXVIII] In internal-combustion engines having the valve tappets constructed to serve as pumps for forcing oil to parts of the engine for lubricating or cooling purposes, the tappets 11 are formed with enlarged portions 24 serving as pump pistons working in enlarged bores 26 in the tappet guides, so that when the tappets are in the lower position, oil splashed up from the connecting-rods and cranks enters through slots 27, and on the upstroke of the tappets is forced through passages 29, 30, past ball valve 31, and through passages 38, 43, 44 to the valve rockers 8. In a similar way, oil may be pumped to a hollow valve for cooling. In side-valve engines, the tappets are provided with tubular extensions entering the hollow valve stems, the bores in which are somewhat larger than the tubular extensions to allow the cooling-oil to return to the crank case.
