131,730. Black, G. J. F. Aug. 28, 1918. Compressed-air engines.-A compressed-air engine for use underground is of the type having a cylinder 1 with inlet ports 7, 8 at the ends, a central exhaust port 2 uncovered by the piston 4 at the end of each stroke, a central supply port 11, and a piston valve 9 working in a circular bore 10 parallel with the cylinder and controlling the ports 7, 8. The working parts are all enclosed in a casing 25 containing the lubricating oil. The casing is preferably divided at 45, 46 through the bearings of the crank-shaft 29 and the rock-shaft 44, and the part 25 is integral with the cylinder 1, cross-head guide 24, &c. The ports 7, 8 are provided with relief valves 18 for preventing excessive pressure in the cylinder at the end of each stroke.
