Abstract

1346901 I C engines B F DEACON 26 May 1971 [26 May 1970] 25335/70 Heading F1B In an engine having at least one cylinder 1 the piston 10 is hollow and reciprocates on the extension 18 of an output shaft 19. The piston 10 is prevented from rotating relative to the extension 18 or the cylinder 1, provisional drawing (not shown), by rollers 52 and cam followers 55, 57 carried by the cylinder or piston co-operate with a cam track 54 in the piston or on the extension. A poppet valve 15, e.g. containing sodium supported by the extension 18, controls communication between the piston interior and the combustion chamber 5 and opens as the piston 10 approaches B.D.C. to permit gas to flow from the piston interior to the combustion chamber. The valve 15 is opened by the pressure in the piston interior and/or by contact with the extension 18 or by contact of the end (21), provisional drawing, of the valve stem (16) with oil at the bottom of a bore (20) in the extension. The valve 15 may be opened hydraulically, pneumatically or by cams. In the two-stoke engine shown, petrol, lubricant and air mixture is drawn from a carburetter or respective carburetters through a rotary face valve 33 and one or more non-return valves into chambers respectively above and below the pump piston 12 for delivery to cavities 66 in the cylinder head 2 or an annular cavity (30), provisional drawing, in the cylinder head, and the piston interior and combustion chamber 5, respectively. Lubricant is fed through passages 63, 64 in the extension 18 to the rollers 52. Cylinders 1 may be provided at both ends of the shaft 19 and a number of shafts 19 may be geared to an overall output shaft. The locations of the cam followers and cam track may be reversed. Labyrinth seals may be provided between the piston 10 and cylinder 1.
