Abstract
582,115. Rotary valves. BRIGGS MANUFACTURING CO., and GERNANDT, W. G. Aug. 21, 1944, No. 15922. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (vi)] An internal combustion engine has a cylinder head carrying a conical rotary valve with bearing rings 75, 78, interposed between the valve and its bearing wall and extending into a recess in the valve or wall. The valve which has a stem 26 is driven from the crank shaft through a vertical shaft and bevel gears is disposed in a cylinder head member 28 which is screwed at 30 to a second head or mask member 29 screwed to the cylinder 22. The member 29 terminates in a throat portion 32 opening into the combustion chamber 34 of the rotary valve, and its lower surface is shaped to conform to a conical domed portion 23a of the piston. The stem 26 of the valve is hollow and is closed by a plug 50, to seal off a cavity 49 which may contain metallic sodium or other coolant. The valve has a single port 59 adapted to register successively with intake port, spark plug at 61 and exhaust port. Preferably fuel injection is employed. For lubrication, an oil supply passage 70 leads through port 68 to a bushing 67 forming a bearing for the hub of driving gear 39 the gear hub having a groove 73 extended at 74 so that at every revolution of the valve oil is supplied to a port 69 in the bushing leading to a passage 71 which supplies passages 72 leading to the upper and lower bearing rings which are both free to float in their recesses with clearances at 76a, 79a. The floating mounting permits rotation of the rings during running at about half the valve speed thus reducing friction losses. Each bearing ring has zig-zag oil grooves 80, 81, Fig. 4, on the outer and inner surfaces respectively the grooves being connected at the cross-over points by cross-drilled holes 82. The areas between the bearing rings are relieved so as to confine the bearing surface to the rings.
