Abstract

580,391. Lubricating rotary valves; cooling cylinders. BRIGGS MANUFACTURING CO., and BALL, A. P. Aug. 21, 1944, No. 15920. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (vi)] In an engine with a rotary or oscillating valve, in the cylinder head, formed with a combustion chamber, lubricant is supplied to the valve at a point between the intake and exhaust conduits and immediately opposite the igniter. As shown a sodium-cooled frusto-conical valve 25 having a single port 29 which registers successively with an igniter 22 and inlet and exhaust conduits is lubricated from a conduit 36 through passages 36a, 36b above and below the port 29. Further lubricant is supplied to the top of the valve through a conduit 37. The valve 25 is adjusted relative to its seat by a sleeve 43 engaging a thrust bearing 45 and is rotated by a gear 39 splined to an extension 30 of the valve and held in engagement by an adjustable sleeve 42 engaging a ball bearing 41, with a gear 47, driven from the crankshaft. The cylinder head is made in two parts 15,-31 provided with fins 15a, 31a and cooling jackets 57, 58.
