Abstract
249,272. Prime, W. A. Feb. 2, 1925. Reversing-valves.-A triple expansion engine is provided with three cylinders 1, 2, 3 working on cranks at 120‹. The engine is reversible, the distributing is effected by the pistons which are ported for the purpose, and a reversing-valve Q<1> is arranged between one of the low-pressure cylinders 3 and the high-pressure cylinder 1 and controls the interconnection between the various passages connecting the cylinders. Fluid pressure is supplied to the interior of one or the other of the lower-pressure pistons H<2>, H<3> which controls the supply to the high-pressure cylinder 1 through one or the other of two passages M, M<1> which are controlled by a valve X which is rotated for reversal by toothed gearing connected to the valve Q<1>. In the position shown, steam passes through passages M through piston H<2> to the top of cylinder 1 until half stroke, when it is cut off by piston H' closing the connection between cylinders 2, 1. When piston H' uncovers an exhaust port S fluid flows through a passage V<2> to the top of the low-pressure cylinder 3. When piston H<3> uncovers port P the fluid passes to the top of piston H<2> through the ported valve Q<1> and channel N<3>. Upon the piston H<2> uncovering the exhaust port P<3>, the fluid passes to the atmosphere. Means for supplying fluid-pressure from either of the pistons H<2>, H<3> to one of the ends of the highpressure cylinder when the ordinary supply ports therein are closed by the high-pressure piston, are described.
