Abstract

359,764. fluid - pressure engines. KNIGHT, R. F., Ramsey, New Jersey, U.S.A. Nov. 25, 1930, No. 35449. [Class 122 (iv).] In a multiple-cylinder engine using steam, air, &c., each cylinder is provided with a main distributing valve which controls the main supply to and exhaust from its own cylinder and an auxiliary distribution in another cylinder to facilitate starting. The auxiliary passages are connected to chests containing reversing valves which interchange the connections for reverse running. The reversing valves are connected up to the main valve-gear control and in addition may be independently adjusted by hand. In the three-cylinder engine shown in Fig. 1, the valves 10, 11, 12 of cylinders 1, 2, 3 control the main ports 13 .. 18 respectively. The valve chamber 7 has auxiliary ports 26, 27 controlled by valve 10 and connected to ports 28, 29 of cylinder 2, similarly the chamber 8 has ports 30, 31 controlled by valve 11 and leading to ports 32, 33 in cylinder 3, and chamber 9 has ports 34, 35 controlled by valve 12 and leading to ports 36, 37 in cylinder 1. The pistons 4, 5, 6 are connected to cranks at 120‹, and the main cut-off is at 30 per cent stroke. A vertical, reversible engine with similar valve mechanism is shown in Figs. 7 and 8. The auxiliary passages 30, 32, 26, 28, 34, 36 are interconnected by a plug valve 47a ; the auxiliary passages 31, 33, 27, 29, 35, 37 are interconnected by a valve 47b. The plug-valve levers are adjustably connected by rods 48, 46 to a block 45 in a guide in the main valve-gear controlling quadrant 41. The rods 48, 46 are moved when the main gear is adjusted or reversed by the hand-wheel 38. The rods 48, 46 may be independently moved by a hand-lever 49 mounted on the quadrant and connected to the block 45. The auxiliary mechanism allows of auxiliary supply to and exhaust from each cylinder after the main cut-off and the closing of the main exhaust. The auxiliary steam supply is decreased or reduced to zero as the speed increases and the main cut-off is shortened. The auxiliary ports may be designed to provide a large auxiliary exhaust with a small auxiliary inlet, the inlet going out of action first, or the main valves may be adapted to supply only auxiliary admission. The invention may be applied to six cylinder, single-acting V- engines. The auxiliary passages may be adapted to take different sized perforated plugs to control their areas.
